The geographic ground zero: the original Pacific Northwest scene around Sub Pop. Sludgy, fuzz-drenched riffs from Big Muff pedals, Jack Endino's raw production, and a flannel-clad ethos of feedback over flash. Sound runs from Mudhoney's garage filth to Soundgarden's heavy psych and Alice in Chains' doom-laced harmonies.

History

Built in Seattle and Olympia clubs from 1987 onward, codified by Sub Pop founders Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman and engineer Jack Endino. Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Tad and Mother Love Bone made the city a global pilgrimage site after 1991. Heroin deaths and overexposure eroded the local scene by the mid-90s.
