Schranz is extremely hard, loop-driven techno associated with pounding kicks, relentless percussion, distorted grooves, and a raw industrial edge. It is techno rather than hardcore, but it shares hard dance's physical intensity. The sound is stripped, functional, and punishing, built for long tunnel-like club pressure.

History

Schranz is strongly associated with German hard techno and the late-1990s/2000s work of Chris Liebing, DJ Rush, Andreas Kremer, Sven Wittekind, Frank Kvitta, Robert Natus, Arkus P, O.B.I., Pet Duo, and Viper XXL. The term became a scene shorthand for harder, faster techno before later hard-techno revivals adopted similar energy. Its influence is audible in modern industrial techno and neo-rave sets.
