Savoy Opera (Gilbert & Sullivan)
Located in 1 route
Savoy opera is the series of comic operas by librettist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, the direct ancestor of the modern musical, blending witty satirical librettos with tuneful, craftsmanlike scores. Musically it marries Sullivan's elegant, melodious, often mock-Handelian and mock-operatic writing to Gilbert's dazzling patter songs, topsy-turvy plots, and precise rhyming; choruses, madrigals, and rapid comic ensembles abound. Performed by trained light-operatic voices with orchestra, the works prize diction, wit, and ensemble precision. The mood is sparkling, satirical, and genteelly absurd, English comic opera at its most enduring.
History
Produced by Richard D'Oyly Carte, Gilbert and Sullivan's partnership ran from Trial by Jury (1875) through H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1879), The Mikado (1885), and The Gondoliers (1889), most premiering at Carte's purpose-built Savoy Theatre — hence "Savoy operas." Wildly popular in Britain, America, and the colonies, they were performed for a century by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which held the definitive performance tradition. Their integration of satirical book, character song, and chorus profoundly shaped Broadway and the West End; the works remain staples of amateur and professional companies and a foundation of English-language musical theatre.
