Sacred Country is the widest older sacred umbrella within country: hymns, revival songs, moral ballads, and explicitly devotional performances in country instrumentation and vocal vernacular. It is usually less stylistically specialized than Southern Gospel Country and less modernized than Christian Country.

History

Country artists rarely separated home, church, and performance repertory in the early decades, so sacred material was foundational rather than peripheral. As commercial categories multiplied, Sacred Country remained a simple but durable vessel for artists who wanted to sing faith without giving up twang, simplicity, or rural plainness.
