Roots Rock Blues is blues played with rock-band weight but roots-music discipline. It favors riffs, live drums, tube-amp guitar, direct vocals and songs that can sit beside Southern rock, garage rock, Americana or bar-band rock. Unlike arena blues-rock, it usually keeps the arrangement earthy and song-centered. The blues remains in the phrasing and chord language; the rock side supplies volume, hooks and forward drive.

History

The style runs from the Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, ZZ Top and Southern rock into Stevie Ray Vaughan's revival era, then through The Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr., Tedeschi Trucks Band and North Mississippi Allstars. Independent labels and festival circuits made roots rock blues durable because it could appeal to blues listeners, guitar fans and rock audiences at the same time. Modern versions often trade polish for immediacy.
