Spanish-language rock from Latin America and Spain - guitar-driven bands that absorbed new wave, post-punk and blues-rock and sang in Spanish, fusing them with local rhythms and pointed social lyrics. Spans Argentine, Mexican, Chilean and Spanish scenes that turned regional rock into a pan-Hispanic mass movement.

History

Took shape in early-1980s Buenos Aires, Santiago and Mexico City as bands like Soda Stereo and Los Prisioneros recast Anglo rock in Spanish with synth-pop and post-punk edges. The mid-80s "Rock en tu idioma" push and MTV Latin America's 1993 launch consolidated it into a continent-spanning genre, carrying Caifanes, Maná and Spain's Héroes del Silencio to stadiums.
