Road march soca is soca crafted to win the Road March — the song played most at Trinidad Carnival's judging points as masquerade bands cross the stage. These songs are built for hours of street marching: steady pounding tempo, massive singalong refrains, wave-and-jump commands, brass-and-synth fanfares and hooks simple enough for tens of thousands to chant in the sun. History
The Road March title dates to early calypso, but from the late 1970s soca took it over, and the modern era belongs to soca's giants: Superblue's jump-and-wave wins of the 1990s ("Signal to Lara," 1995), Fay-Ann Lyons' titles ("Get On," 2008), JW & Blaze's 2010 phenomenon "Palance," and Machel Montano's record-tying haul including "Advantage" (2011) and "Soca Kingdom" (2018). "Famalay" (Skinny Fabulous with Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin) took 2019 and "Stage Gone Bad" (Iwer George with Kes) won 2020. Winning the road remains soca's supreme popular honor.
