Riot Grrrl is punk as feminist intervention: shouted vocals, simple riffs, zines, meetings, manifestos, all-ages shows, direct talk about sexism, abuse, sexuality, body politics and girls claiming space in hostile scenes. The music can be scrappy, melodic, noisy or bratty, but the movement mattered because it treated punk as a tool for organizing and self-definition, not just a sound or fashion.
History
The scene formed around Olympia, Washington, and Washington, D.C., with Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, Excuse 17, Sleater-Kinney and Huggy Bear becoming key reference points. Kill Rock Stars, K Records, zine networks and college towns carried the language outward. Riot grrrl's media relationship was tense, but its influence is durable: feminist punk, indie rock, queer DIY scenes and modern protest pop still borrow its methods.
