Minimal, tinny, hyper-catchy rap engineered to sound great as a cellphone ringtone: sparse snap-and-clap beats, simple synth blips, a chanted dance-instruction hook and tons of repetition. Production is deliberately thin and bright so it cuts through a phone speaker; novelty and one dance move matter more than lyrical depth.
History
Emerged from Atlanta's mid-2000s snap scene when D4L's 'Laffy Taffy' (2005) sold millions more as a ringtone than as a song. By 2007 ringtones dominated mobile, and rap dominated ringtones — Soulja Boy's 'Crank That,' Shop Boyz and Huey ruled the charts. The fad collapsed as app stores and streaming killed paid ringtone sales.
