Riddim is a stripped, repetitive, wonky branch of dubstep built from square-wave bass patterns, minimal drums, metallic stabs, and call-and-response bass phrasing. It keeps the 140-ish half-time framework but reduces melody and arrangement to hypnotic bass motifs designed for doubles, chops, and DJ battles.
History
The style developed from early dubstep's sparse wobble tracks, underground tearout, and the more minimal side of brostep, with producers refining a sound that was crude on purpose and extremely effective in live mixing. Subfiltronik, Infekt, Badklaat, Phiso, Bommer, Crowell, Oolacile, Aweminus, and Virtual Riot became key names in a scene driven by SoundCloud clips, dubplates, and festival rail culture. Riddim's influence spread into tearout, colour bass, melodic riddim, and modern heavy dubstep's double-drop vocabulary.
