Retro Lounge revives mid-century cocktail, bachelor-pad, and exotica aesthetics through modern recording, irony-aware styling, and crate-digger canon-building. It can be playful or sincere, but it almost always references the textures of 1950s–60s lounge—vibes, bongos, faux-exotic themes, whispery vocals, and ultra-styled arrangements.
History
The revival began as younger listeners rediscovered their parents’ and grandparents’ lounge records, then accelerated in the 1990s through the Cocktail Nation scene, Shibuya-kei affinities, and compilation culture such as Capitol’s Ultra-Lounge series; Combustible Edison became a flagship act, while Pink Martini, Pizzicato Five, Tipsy, The Gentle People, and Don Tiki showed how retro lounge could branch toward neo-exotica, pop pastiche, downtempo, and cosmopolitan cabaret without abandoning its vintage reference frame.
