History
The style emerged from 1990s lounge revival, thrift-store LP culture, electronic crate-digging, and bands who heard Esquivel, Mancini, Denny, and Perrey as usable pop vocabulary rather than kitsch trash. Combustible Edison, Stereolab, Air, Tipsy, Pizzicato Five, Dimitri From Paris, The Gentle People, and Ursula 1000 blended vintage hi-fi signifiers with contemporary production and club-adjacent sensibility. Retro-Futurist Lounge fed downtempo, electro-lounge, indie lounge, advertising music, and the broader aesthetic of analog futurism.
