Retro Country Rock

Retro country rock consciously revives earlier country-rock and rockabilly textures—twang guitars, slapback, harmony leads, and vintage groove—within later recordings. It is stylishly backward-looking without necessarily being museum stiff.

History

The lane developed during late-1970s and 1980s rockabilly revival and later roots revivals, when musicians reassembled older American sounds for new audiences. Stray Cats, BR5-49, The Derailers, JD McPherson, and others made nostalgia energetic rather than merely decorative.
