Renegade Country
A close cousin of outlaw country emphasizing the lone-wanderer, against-the-grain persona, with mid-tempo road grooves, twangy electric lead, and steady, unfussy drumming. Vocals are husky and self-assured, the production stays lean and band-driven, and the lyrics dwell on rambling, breaking rules, and going one's own way. The overall feel is restless and self-reliant.
History
"Renegade" entered the outlaw vocabulary through the 1976 "Wanted! The Outlaws" marketing and Waylon Jennings' own self-styled outsider image, with the word later popularized by Steve Earle's "The Hard Way"-era persona and by acts framing themselves as renegades against Nashville. The lane overlaps almost entirely with classic outlaw country but stresses the rebel-loner archetype and the romance of life on the run.
