Reggae-Punk blends punk's attack with reggae's skank, bass weight and offbeat looseness. It can be political and tense like The Clash, blazing and spiritual like Bad Brains, or relaxed and sun-baked like Sublime, but the style always depends on friction between clipped punk urgency and Jamaican rhythm. The best tracks do not simply paste reggae sections onto punk songs; they let bass, space and groove change the band's whole posture.
History
Punk and reggae were linked from the start through London sound systems, Caribbean immigrant culture, Rock Against Racism and shared opposition to British establishment politics. The Clash, The Ruts and Stiff Little Fingers made reggae part of punk's first-wave vocabulary, while Bad Brains brought Rastafarian reggae into hardcore. Operation Ivy, Rancid, Sublime, 311, Pepper and later punk-reggae bands turned the hybrid into a durable festival and skate-scene language.
