Red Dirt Rock

Red Dirt rock combines Oklahoma/Texas songwriting and country themes with live-band electric force, bar-stage rhythm, and choruses built for regional crowds to sing back. It is rougher and more independent than mainstream country rock, with a stronger local-scene identity.

History

The style grew from Stillwater, Tulsa, and Texas circuits where red dirt country bands pushed louder and looser than Nashville norms. Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Boland and allied acts made this lane central to the Southwest's independent country culture.
