Documentary-minded street rap that frames itself as unvarnished reportage of inner-city life — poverty, violence, addiction, policing and consequence — over hard, often somber boom-bap or funk. Less about bravado than testimony, it foregrounds vivid, journalistic detail and moral weight, the term many pioneers preferred to the sensational 'gangsta' label.
History
Many West Coast and Houston artists used 'reality rap' to describe their work before media adopted 'gangsta rap.' Ice-T, N.W.A and especially Scarface and the Geto Boys leaned into its first-person, consequence-aware storytelling — bleak, introspective narratives that documented street conditions rather than glamorizing them.
