Raw Trance

Raw trance is abrasive, ravey, and tactile: sharper drums, less polished synths, acid and distorted edges, and trance structures with an underground rather than sentimental finish. It often overlaps with fast techno and hard trance without fully surrendering the trance sense of propulsion.

History

The lane became prominent as younger club scenes rediscovered 1990s trance and filtered it through modern harder production. Beatport’s 2023 category split helped formalize the sound, with artists like KI/KI, Maruwa, David Forbes, Lostly, John 00 Fleming, and other tougher-edge producers occupying the raw end of the spectrum.
