Rave Breaks is the breakbeat sound of early rave: euphoric stabs, chopped Amen-style drums, pitched-up vocals, sirens, reggae bass, piano rushes, and sample overload. It overlaps with breakbeat hardcore, but the tag is useful when the emphasis is the rave break itself rather than hardcore's later speed or jungle's deeper drum science. These records sound wide-eyed, messy, and ecstatic - designed for fields, warehouses, pirate radio, and enormous communal release.

History

U.K. rave producers used samplers to collapse hip-hop breaks, Belgian techno, reggae, acid house, cartoons, soul vocals, and film snippets into fast-moving tracks. The Prodigy, Shades of Rhythm, Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era, Altern-8, Acen, SL2, Blame, Hyper On Experience, and Moving Shadow/Production House-adjacent producers turned breakbeats into the rave era's main engine. As rave fragmented, Rave Breaks fed jungle, happy hardcore, darkside, drum and bass, and later old-school revival edits.
