Rave is both a music tag and a social setting: loud repetitive electronic music, powerful sound systems, lights, crowds, all-night spaces, and music designed for collective release. Sonically it can include breakbeat hardcore, acid, techno, trance, jungle, gabber, and rave-pop, but the shared thread is ecstatic functional intensity. In this tree, the tag captures tracks that became shorthand for rave culture rather than one narrow production formula.
History
Rave culture formed from acid house parties, warehouse events, club networks, pirate radio, free parties, and European youth culture at the turn of the 1990s. The KLF, The Prodigy, Orbital, Altern-8, Moby, Joey Beltram, N-Joi, SL2, Acen, 2 Bad Mice, Underworld, and The Shamen all represent different sides of the word. Later commercial EDM borrowed rave's scale and visual language, but old-school rave remains tied to a more underground and politically contested moment.
