The most format-tested strain of post-grunge: tightly compressed, chorus-maximized rock engineered for modern-rock and active-rock radio. Crunchy but clean drop-tuned riffs, soaring earnest vocals, and reliably big lighter-in-the-air bridges. Emotion is broad and uplifting; rough edges are mixed out in favor of singalong scale.
History
Crystallized in the late 90s and 2000s as Creed, Nickelback and 3 Doors Down turned post-grunge into a commercial juggernaut on Clear Channel-era rock radio. Daughtry and Theory of a Deadman extended the formula into the late 2000s. Ubiquitous and lucrative, it became shorthand for rock's polished, critically maligned mainstream.
