R&B Teen Pop
tagStarted 1994Peak 1996-2005Last big hit still active
Teen pop fused with contemporary R&B: swung new-jack and hip-hop drum programming, melismatic young vocals, smooth keyboard pads, and romance lyrics delivered with soulful runs. Crossover-built for both R&B and pop radio, it foregrounds vocal agility and groove over bubblegum simplicity while keeping the youthful, radio-friendly sheen.
History
Aaliyah's 1994 debut at fifteen, plus teen-launched Brandy and Monica, set the template for soulful pop crossover by very young singers. The strain carried into the 2000s with B2K, then teen breakouts Mario ('Let Me Love You,' 2004) and JoJo ('Leave (Get Out),' 2004), blending R&B grooves with chart-pop accessibility.
