R&B Dance fuses R&B vocal phrasing, melisma, syncopation, and groove with club-tempo drums, synth bass, house or electro-pop production, and chorus-driven pop structure. It is usually warmer and more rhythmically sensual than straight dance-pop, often using funk guitar, new jack swing, electro-R&B drums, or house pianos under polished lead vocals.

History

The style grew out of post-disco, boogie, electro-funk, and the Minneapolis sound, then expanded through new jack swing, freestyle, house remixes, and MTV-era pop-R&B. Janet Jackson and Jody Watley established the template for choreographed R&B club-pop, while the 2000s brought Rihanna, Beyoncé, Usher, Ciara, Chris Brown, and Ne-Yo into electro-house, crunk&B, and synth-heavy club production. Later artists folded in synthwave, Afrobeats, Jersey club, and EDM-pop, but the core remains R&B vocal authority riding dance-floor machinery.
