History
Luther Vandross codified the modern R&B ballad across the 1980s with velvet, gospel-rooted phrasing, while Boyz II Men's a cappella-laced harmonies dominated the early-90s charts. Toni Braxton and Babyface brought sophisticated adult-contemporary polish. The form remained R&B's commercial backbone through the 1990s and seeded later balladeers across the genre.
