Queercore is punk built around queer anger, humor, desire and self-made culture: fast songs, zines, film, drag, camp, hardcore, pop-punk and explicit refusal of straight punk's homophobia and mainstream gay respectability. The sound is less a single rhythm than a stance. It makes sexuality, gender and chosen community central, often using punk's roughness to make identity visible without sanding off contradiction.
History
The movement grew from zines and film such as J.D.s and work by Bruce LaBruce and G.B. Jones, then bands including Fifth Column, Team Dresch, Pansy Division, Tribe 8, God Is My Co-Pilot and The Butchies made it a durable scene. Lookout!, Chainsaw and Mr. Lady helped circulate records. Later queer punk, trans punk and riot grrrl-adjacent scenes inherited its mix of music, publication and community-building.
