The foundational first-wave sound: buzzsaw downstroke guitars, locked 4/4 drums, two-minute songs, no solos, and sneered, plain-spoken vocals. Production is raw and trebly, hooks come from chant-along choruses, and the energy is deliberately amateur and confrontational, prizing speed and attitude over musicianship.
History
Born around 1976 at New York's CBGB and London's 100 Club, crystallized by the Ramones' 1976 debut and the Sex Pistols' 1977 explosion. The Clash, Damned, and Buzzcocks rounded out the original wave on both sides of the Atlantic, igniting a worldwide DIY movement and seeding every later punk offshoot.
