Fast, three-chord punk turned into political reportage and outrage. Buzzsaw guitars, shouted gang vocals, two-minute blasts of anti-Thatcher, anti-racist, anti-establishment fury. Less ideologically rigid than anarcho-punk, it ranges from danceable ska-punk to street-level Oi!, but always foregrounds a sneered slogan and a tabloid-headline grievance over polish.
History
Erupted from UK punk's 1977 wave as bands aimed energy at unemployment, racism and the state. The Clash modeled engaged punk; Stiff Little Fingers reported the Troubles; Rock Against Racism gigs gave it a movement. The Dead Kennedys carried satirical political punk to America, seeding decades of activist punk.
