History
Pioneered in 1968 when Motown producer Norman Whitfield, inspired by Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic, steered the Temptations into harder, fuzz-guitar territory with 'Cloud Nine.' The Undisputed Truth and Funkadelic deepened the style; its socially conscious, effects-laden sound shaped early-'70s soul before fading into smoother funk.
