Psychedelic / Psytrance / Psybient covers electronic music built for altered-state dance floors and chillout spaces: rolling basslines, fast arpeggios, FM squelch, ritual samples, long builds, alien sound design, and cosmic ambient release. It ranges from Goa trance and full-on festival psy to darker forest, hi-tech, psycore, progressive psy, psy-techno, tribal triplet drops, and slow psychill. The common thread is trance as a physical and imaginative state, not just a chord progression.

History

The family grew from Goa beach parties, acid house travel circuits, early trance, Israeli and UK psychedelic labels, and the festival networks around TIP, Dragonfly, Twisted, Flying Rhino, HOMmega, Iboga, Nano, Parvati, and Ultimae. Hallucinogen, Astral Projection, Juno Reactor, X-Dream, Goa Gil, Raja Ram, Infected Mushroom, GMS, 1200 Micrograms, Astrix, Ace Ventura, Liquid Soul, Vini Vici, Shpongle, Ott, and Carbon Based Lifeforms mark different routes through the culture. By the 2000s, psytrance had split into morning full-on, progressive psy, darkpsy, forest, hi-tech, psychill, and techno-adjacent branches while staying anchored in outdoor festivals and long-form DJ sets.
