Composition-heavy jazz rock built on suite-length forms, shifting time signatures and through-written charts rather than open blowing. Often British in temperament: cool brass and reed writing, organ, fuzz guitar, restless meter changes. Cerebral and architectural, fusing prog's structural ambition with jazz improvisation and harmonic depth.
History
Emerged in late-60s Britain as ex-blues and jazz players formed Nucleus, Colosseum and Soft Machine. Ian Carr's Nucleus won Montreux in 1970 with Elastic Rock; Colosseum's Jon Hiseman bridged blues and big-band jazz. The strain overlapped Canterbury and paralleled Mahavishnu Orchestra's compositional rigor in the US, feeding later prog-fusion acts like Brand X through the decade.
