The colloquial shorthand and fan-culture label for progressive rock: epic side-long tracks, gatefold-sleeve mythology, banks of synthesizers and the gleeful complexity its devotees prize. Same sonic DNA as progressive rock - Mellotron, odd meters, suites - but the term carries the genre's record-collector identity and self-aware grandeur.

History

The clipped form entered the lexicon in the early 1970s as the music dominated UK and US album charts. Bands like Yes, ELP and Genesis defined its excess; by the late 1970s 'prog' was a punk-era insult before fans reclaimed it. Magazine Prog (launched 2009) and festivals cemented it as a proud subculture badge.
