Process music makes its underlying system audible: phase shifts, tape loops, additive growth, subtractive change, or sustained tuning logic become the piece’s drama. The sound can seem almost objective at first, but the ear quickly gets hooked on tiny deviations, alignment changes, and the strange emotional life of a transparent procedure.
History
Reich’s tape pieces and phasing works made “the process” itself a compositional subject, while Riley, Glass, Young, and kindred artists explored related structures in live ensemble and just-intonation environments; the idea reshaped late-20th-century composition by proving that a piece could be generated less by narrative development than by a clearly perceivable system unfolding in time.
