Power Trio Blues Rock
tagStarted mid-1960sPeak 1967–1971; revived 1990sLast big hit still active
Power trio blues rock strips the band to guitar, bass, and drums, which gives the guitarist maximal harmonic and dynamic responsibility. The sound is direct, loud, conversational, and spacious enough for riffs and solos to hit with unusual force.
History
Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience codified the format, proving a three-piece could sound larger than many six-piece bands. ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Gov’t Mule, and Eric Gales later extended the trio template into boogie, electric blues, and modern blues-rock.
