Power-Pop Punk combines punk's speed and bite with power-pop's bright hooks, harmonies, romantic frustration and compact songwriting. Guitars are crisp rather than sludgy, choruses arrive quickly, and vocals often sound more anxious or lovesick than purely angry. It is the part of punk that keeps the adrenaline but admits that melody, heartbreak and teenage popcraft can be just as urgent as protest.
History
Buzzcocks and The Undertones made the template by turning punk velocity into sharp, melodic singles, while The Boys, The Records, The Nerves, The Plimsouls and later Descendents connected punk energy to Beatles/Kinks-style songcraft. The sound fed pop-punk, indie power-pop and melodic punk scenes, especially whenever bands wanted punk directness without abandoning tunefulness. Its best records prove that punk's anti-virtuoso ethic could make pop songs tighter rather than dumber.
