Postminimalist chamber music keeps repetitive underpinnings but uses smaller ensembles for sharper detail, more flexible phrase shape, and more intimate interplay than big minimalist groups. Strings, percussion, piano, and mixed ensembles often trade loops and ostinatos in music that is both lean and emotionally legible.
History
As minimalism matured, chamber ensembles became key agents in translating its language into more nuanced, portable, and theatrically varied forms; groups such as Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alarm Will Sound, Sō Percussion, and others carried postminimal chamber writing from concert halls to galleries, indie venues, and cross-genre festivals.
