Garage fuzz wired with post-punk's nervous edges: angular, trebly guitar lines, propulsive motorik or jagged rhythms, deadpan or yelped vocals, and a cold, jittery tension over raw distortion. Less retro-warm than straight garage, it swaps boogie for repetition, paranoia, and wiry, art-damaged drive.
History
Took shape in the late 2000s and 2010s as garage and noise-pop bands absorbed late-70s post-punk angularity. Parquet Courts' krautrock-deadpan churn led a wave that ran through the feedback-soaked menace of Crocodiles, Detroit's scalpel-sharp Protomartyr, and the wiry scuzz of Wax Idols, Useless Eaters, and Nots. Scenes around Goner and In the Red fused garage grit with jittery post-punk nerve.
