Post-Punk takes punk's urgency and turns it angular, atmospheric and exploratory: bass-led grooves, clipped guitar, dub space, synth texture, severe vocals and lyrics about politics, alienation, bodies, cities and systems. It is not simply "after punk" chronologically; it is punk thinking sideways. The style keeps punk's skepticism toward rock tradition while opening room for funk, reggae, electronics, art rock and dance music.
History
Public Image Ltd's early records announced that former punks could reject rock structure entirely, while Joy Division, Gang of Four, Wire, The Fall, Magazine, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure each developed different post-punk grammars. Independent labels, Peel sessions and art-school networks carried the sound across Britain and beyond. Its influence became foundational for goth, new wave, indie, industrial, dance-punk and 2000s post-punk revival.
