Post-minimalism keeps repetition and pulse but allows richer harmony, expressive melody, irregular phrase lengths, thicker counterpoint, and stronger dramatic curves than strict early minimalism. It often feels more narrative, emotionally shaded, and compositionally flexible, with the pattern engine still audible under the surface.
History
The term captures the music that grew out of minimalism once composers loosened hard process and embraced broader harmonic, formal, and theatrical resources; Adams, Nyman, Lang, Wolfe, Richter, Shaw, and many chamber ensembles brought the style into film, concert halls, and indie-classical circuits, where it became a bridge between avant-garde roots and public accessibility.
