Grunge's commercial refinement: the same downtuned, minor-key heaviness sanded into clean, hook-forward radio rock. History
Emerged after Cobain's 1994 death as labels chased grunge's mass appeal without its noise. Bush's Sixteen Stone (1994) and Candlebox bridged the styles; by the late 90s and 2000s Creed, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down and Puddle of Mudd made it rock radio's dominant format, drawing critical scorn even as sales soared.
