Post-classical is the broad umbrella for modern music that retains visible links to classical instrumentation and compositional craft while freely absorbing ambient, electronica, indie, soundtrack, and minimalist language. It is less a single texture than a zone where classical stops acting like a museum and starts behaving like a living studio art.
History
The term gained traction as critics and platforms needed a name for music by artists such as Richter, Frahm, Arnalds, Meredith, and others who did not sit neatly inside either academic contemporary music or pop instrumentalism; its success lies precisely in that productive blur, which made it searchable, marketable, and genuinely useful as a listening map.
