Pop Punk Crossover

tagStarted 2001Peak 2002-2007Last big hit 2013

Punk energy scrubbed for pop radio: fast downstroked power chords, palm-muted guitar verses bursting into huge distorted choruses, snappy drums, and bratty-yet-melodic vocals about high school, breakups, and suburban boredom. Hooks are bright and gang-shouted, tempos are urgent, and the production keeps the speed and snarl while polishing it glossy enough for TRL.

History

Broke into the mainstream in 2002 when Avril Lavigne's 'Complicated' and 'Sk8er Boi' ruled MTV's TRL and pop airplay. Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, and Bowling for Soup followed with top-ten radio hits, turning a cult scene into a chart movement. Centered on a wave of catchy, suburban-angst singles, it carried pop-punk attitude onto Top 40.
