Polka is fast duple-meter dance music with buoyant offbeat lift, clear phrase symmetry, and instrumentation that varies from brass bands to accordion-led ensembles. It is joyous without being vague about it; the beat says “move” and then politely repeats itself until you finally listen.
History
Originating in Bohemia, polka spread through Europe and the Americas as one of the major social dances of the 19th century, adapting to immigrant communities, ballroom culture, festival bands, and regional dance repertoires. In the U.S. Midwest and other diasporic centers it remained a durable working-class celebratory style even after mainstream pop moved on.
