Narrative rock that smuggles politics through story - the death-row guard, the laid-off worker, the wronged outsider - letting the character's situation make the argument. Roots-rock and folk-rock instrumentation, gritty and direct, with the lyric doing the work. The best of it withholds the verdict, trusting plain description to indict war, the death penalty, poverty, or racism.
History
Steve Earle anchored the form, dramatizing the drug war on 'Copperhead Road' (1988) and capital punishment from a guard's view on 'Ellis Unit One' (1995); Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car' (1988) made systemic poverty a personal narrative. The strain extended Dylan-era protest into character study rather than slogan, peaking around post-Reagan and post-9/11 dissent.
