Political Rap

tagStarted mid-1980sPeak 1988–1996; 2014–2020Last big hit still active

Political rap treats state power, race, class, policing, war, and ideology as central subject matter. It prefers argument, testimony, and confrontation over neutrality or vague uplift.

History

Public Enemy made the lane iconic, but dead prez, The Coup, Immortal Technique, Kendrick Lamar, Run the Jewels, and many others have carried it forward in different eras. The style's sound changes with the times; its function—using rap to challenge power—does not.
