History
Leonard Cohen brought published-poet craft to song with 'Suzanne' (1967); Joni Mitchell raised the lyrical bar on Blue (1971) with confessional, image-rich writing like 'A Case of You'; and Patti Smith fused Rimbaud and rock on 'Horses' (1975). These writers treated the verse as text, with Cohen, Smith, and Van Morrison's stream-of-consciousness work establishing rock as a vehicle for serious poetry.
