Poetic R&B emphasizes spoken cadence, literary imagery, self-reflection, Black consciousness, sensual detail and lyrics that unfold like journal pages or stage poems. The music may be neo-soul, acoustic soul, hip-hop soul or live-band R&B, but the signature is language: verses that prize metaphor, testimony and interior life. It is R&B for listeners who want the lyric sheet to feel as important as the groove.

History

The form grew alongside 1990s neo-soul, spoken-word scenes, Def Poetry, coffeehouse circuits and hip-hop's expanding lyric culture. Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Floetry, Musiq Soulchild, India.Arie and later Jamila Woods and Noname made poetic language central to soul and R&B identity. The style gave R&B a literary lane where vulnerability, politics, spirituality and romance could coexist without becoming slogans.
