Poetic folk privileges imagery, metaphor, cadence, and lyrical architecture as much as plot. Harmonically it may remain simple, but the language is heightened, allusive, and rhythmically shaped in ways closer to verse than plain speech.
History
The style came into focus when writers such as Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake made literary density and unusual imagery central to folk song, then resurfaced in later art-minded singer-songwriters. Joanna Newsom, Laura Marling, Vashti Bunyan, and Sufjan Stevens each extended poetic folk in different directions, proving that verbal richness does not require abandoning acoustic immediacy.
