Piano Soft Rock puts acoustic piano or electric piano at the center of soft-rock songwriting, supported by restrained drums, melodic bass, strings, guitar accents, and clear lead vocals. Tempos range from intimate 55 BPM ballads to rolling 115 BPM mid-tempos, with chord movement doing much of the emotional work. The sound is direct, adult, and tuneful: the piano is both confessional booth and radio engine.

History

The style emerged as singer-songwriters and pop-rock bands made the piano a primary rock instrument without adopting hard rock's volume. Elton John, Billy Joel, Carole King, Barry Manilow, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, Chicago, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and Dan Fogelberg each used piano to bridge pop craft, introspection, and adult radio accessibility. Piano Soft Rock fed power ballads, AC balladry, piano adult contemporary, and later singer-songwriter pop from the 1990s onward.
