Piano Quartet

Piano quartet adds viola to the piano trio, which thickens the middle register and makes the texture darker, richer, and more orchestral. The style often sounds grander than a trio but still agile, with the piano handling harmonic weight while the strings can sing in glowing three-part harmony or attack like a compact symphonic section.
History
Mozart gave the format its first lasting masterpieces, though the combination remained less common than trio or quintet because it is hard to write idiomatically. By the 19th century, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, and Fauré showed how the extra inner voice could deepen both contrapuntal detail and Romantic warmth.
