Piano and Strings pairs the clarity of piano melody with the enveloping sustain of chamber or synth-string accompaniment, creating a fuller emotional field than solo piano alone. The result is usually cinematic, tender, and gently swelling rather than stark or percussive.

History

This blend has roots in New Age, film music, and soft classical crossover, but it became especially prominent in the ambient-classical streaming era; Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Helen Jane Long, Secret Garden, and Peter Kater all supply well-known examples in which piano acts as the spine and strings provide the air around it.
